Abstract	Los precios mundiales de algodón en 2012 se vieron influidos por las fuerzas de la competencia, con la demanda mundial aumentando después de dos años de contracción y con altos niveles de existencias, creando incertidumbre sobre las perspectivas futuras. Los altos precios de los granos y las semillas oleaginosas ayudaron a sostener los precios del algodón, los cuales, sin embargo, se mantuvieron por debajo de los del año anterior durante casi toda la campaña comercial. Las reservas mundiales de algodón aumentaron por tercer año consecutivo, pero la mayor parte del incremento se atribuye a la construcción de las reservas oficiales de China. El consumo continuó decayendo en China _el consumidor industrial más grande del mundo por un amplio margen_ pero aumentó en otros países, en tanto que la importación de hilo en China creció considerablemente. Se prevé con relativa certeza una producción de algodón más baja en el siguiente año, con informes iniciales que indican que los granjeros estadounidenses tienen la intención de plantar 4 Mha, una reducción de 19%. También se espera que disminuya el área plantada en China, a pesar de un relativamente alto precio de garantía.
