Abstract	Depuis plusieurs décennies, beaucoup de pays s’emploient à encourager l’innovation dans les technologies de recyclage des matériaux et de gestion des déchets. Il ressort des données qui figurent dans le présent chapitre que la première vague de mesures (fin des années 80, début des années 90) a pu stimuler l’innovation, mais que ses effets sont aujourd’hui moins prononcés. La maturité technologique de ce secteur, en comparaison avec d’autres domaines de l’innovation environnementale, est au nombre des explications possibles. Quoi qu’il en soit, dans beaucoup de pays, les taux de recyclage augmentent et la production de déchets par unité d’activité économique commence à diminuer. Dans les secteurs arrivés à maturité, les réponses aux chocs engendrés par la politique environnementale se reflètent peut-être davantage dans des innovations comportementales et organisationnelles que dans des inventions techniques.
