Abstract	Grippe ist weltweit eine häufig auftretende Infektionskrankheit, von der Menschen aller Altersgruppen betroffen sind. So erkranken beispielsweise jedes Jahr zwischen 5% und 20% der Menschen in den Vereinigten Staaten an Grippe (CDC, 2009b). Während sich die meisten Betroffenen schnell erholen, besteht bei Älteren und chronisch Kranken ein erhöhtes Risiko, dass es zu Komplikationen oder gar zu einem tödlichen Ausgang der Krankheit kommt. Zwischen 1979 und 2001 wurden in den Vereinigten Staaten auf Grund von Grippeerkrankungen Jahr für Jahr durchschnittlich über 200 000 Personen in Krankenhäuser eingeliefert und 36 000 Todesfälle verzeichnet (CDC, 2009b). Die erwerbstätige Bevölkerung leidet erheblich unter der Grippe, obwohl die Grippemorbidität und -mortalität vorwiegend die Älteren und chronisch Kranke betrifft (Keech et al., 1998). In Europa verursacht die Grippe etwa 10% der Fehlzeiten am Arbeitsplatz, und die durch verlorene Produktivität in Frankreich und Deutschland bedingten Kosten wurden auf zwischen 9,3 Mrd. und 14,1 Mrd. US-$ pro Jahr geschätzt (Szucs, 2004).
