| Abstract | Expanding window fountain (EWF) codes use a windowing technique to achieve unequal error protection (UEP) and unequal recovery time. UEP affords significant performance improvement of the more important bits (MIB), but at the cost of performance deterioration of the less important bits (LIB), resulting in poor intermediate performance of the EWF coding. In this study, the authors propose the utilisation of intermediate feedback in EWF coding to terminate the encoding of the MIB after their recovery, with the purpose of enhancing the intermediate performance of EWF codes over binary input additive white Gaussian noise (BIAWGN) channels. The effectiveness of the proposed coding scheme is analysed and evaluated by using extrinsic information transfer functions to investigate the theoretical performance and obtain the closed-form formula of the bit error rate (BER) of the LIB after the intermediate feedback. The results of the theoretical analysis and simulation of the scheme using additive white Gaussian noises with different signal-to-noise ratios reveal an improvement in the BER performance of the LIB compared to the case of conventional EWF coding, and also show that the scheme significantly enhances the intermediate performance of the EWF codes and improves the transmission efficiency. |

National Digital Library of India (NDLI) is a virtual repository of learning resources which is not just a repository with search/browse facilities but provides a host of services for the learner community. It is sponsored and mentored by Ministry of Education, Government of India, through its National Mission on Education through Information and Communication Technology (NMEICT). Filtered and federated searching is employed to facilitate focused searching so that learners can find the right resource with least effort and in minimum time. NDLI provides user group-specific services such as Examination Preparatory for School and College students and job aspirants. Services for Researchers and general learners are also provided. NDLI is designed to hold content of any language and provides interface support for 10 most widely used Indian languages. It is built to provide support for all academic levels including researchers and life-long learners, all disciplines, all popular forms of access devices and differently-abled learners. It is designed to enable people to learn and prepare from best practices from all over the world and to facilitate researchers to perform inter-linked exploration from multiple sources. It is developed, operated and maintained from Indian Institute of Technology Kharagpur.
