| Abstract | A public access database lists major disturbances in the power network of the USA over the last 23 years. Initial analysis of this data set raised several questions that were subsequently debated but not fully resolved. These questions relate to the seasonal pattern of disturbances, the possibility of an upward trend in the number and severity of disturbances, and the exact form of the distribution of statistics from these data. The latter question relates to the current view, held by some researchers, of the power network as a complex system, and its implications for a deeper understanding of disturbances, especially the catastrophic variety. The work reported here takes advantage of new data that has extended this dataset to cover 23 years of disturbances. We present the first analysis based on this more complete dataset, and using time series breakpoint and statistical analysis, show evidence of seasonal and upwards trends in the statistics of disturbances. While questioning previous assertions about the form of the tails of the distributions for measures of severity, we support the view that the electricity network can be analyzed and understood from a complex systems viewpoint. |

National Digital Library of India (NDLI) is a virtual repository of learning resources which is not just a repository with search/browse facilities but provides a host of services for the learner community. It is sponsored and mentored by Ministry of Education, Government of India, through its National Mission on Education through Information and Communication Technology (NMEICT). Filtered and federated searching is employed to facilitate focused searching so that learners can find the right resource with least effort and in minimum time. NDLI provides user group-specific services such as Examination Preparatory for School and College students and job aspirants. Services for Researchers and general learners are also provided. NDLI is designed to hold content of any language and provides interface support for 10 most widely used Indian languages. It is built to provide support for all academic levels including researchers and life-long learners, all disciplines, all popular forms of access devices and differently-abled learners. It is designed to enable people to learn and prepare from best practices from all over the world and to facilitate researchers to perform inter-linked exploration from multiple sources. It is developed, operated and maintained from Indian Institute of Technology Kharagpur.
