| Abstract | Presents a hybrid method that combines the simulated annealing with tabu mechanism for the simple (or uncapacitated) plant location problem. Two modified heuristic procedures are applied for the generation mechanism in simulated annealing. In some cases, the moves guided by the heuristic procedures may cause the search to stick at a local optimum. To avoid this problem, the tabu list is incorporated with the move generation procedures to prohibit the strongly biased moves inherent in heuristics. Therefore, the search diversity is maintained and the most promising space may be explored at the earliest. In addition, a large perturbation scheme is introduced to leap over the barriers during a search and to explore another region of the search space. The control temperature is reheated whenever the large perturbation scheme is activated. The proposed algorithm was tested on a well-known data set taken from QAPLIB, with up to 100 potential locations and 1000 customers. Our experimental results show that the performance of simulated annealing is significantly improved by the incorporation of these two modified heuristics, the tabu list and the large perturbation scheme. The proposed algorithm is effective and outperforms the traditional simulated annealing and genetic algorithm both on the solution quality and the computation time. |

National Digital Library of India (NDLI) is a virtual repository of learning resources which is not just a repository with search/browse facilities but provides a host of services for the learner community. It is sponsored and mentored by Ministry of Education, Government of India, through its National Mission on Education through Information and Communication Technology (NMEICT). Filtered and federated searching is employed to facilitate focused searching so that learners can find the right resource with least effort and in minimum time. NDLI provides user group-specific services such as Examination Preparatory for School and College students and job aspirants. Services for Researchers and general learners are also provided. NDLI is designed to hold content of any language and provides interface support for 10 most widely used Indian languages. It is built to provide support for all academic levels including researchers and life-long learners, all disciplines, all popular forms of access devices and differently-abled learners. It is designed to enable people to learn and prepare from best practices from all over the world and to facilitate researchers to perform inter-linked exploration from multiple sources. It is developed, operated and maintained from Indian Institute of Technology Kharagpur.
