Abstract	Opening Remarks — I am delighted to be here today to address the UT and SSC 2011 Conference and I have been asked by Professor Ura to talk about ISE's long range AUV and its arctic operations. I can remember 21 years ago in November 1990; the first Underwater Technology gathering was held in Tokyo. During the days, a number of us including Jean Louis Michel of Ifremer, Dana Yoerger of Woods Hole, and Bruce Robison from MBARI along with Tamaki, listened to AUV papers. In the nights, we enjoyed Tokyo's fine restaurants and we spent hours telling each other how to build long range, deep diving AUVs. The R2, Autosub, Theseus and ABE AUVs were all just getting started at the time and we had a lot to talk about. I seem to recall that we all believed that we knew everything that we needed to know. We were the experts.
