Abstract	The handover algorithm of digital cellular mobile systems often require the successive signal samples to be averaged over a period of time. The averaging time is a critical parameter in eliminating the unnecessary handover attempts, and has to be carefully determined for a given mobile environment. Among the factors that influence this parameter are the degree of shadowing present in the mobile environment and the spatial correlation between successive signal samples. This paper investigates the correlation models that could represent the mobile received signal with varying degrees of shadow fading, and the form of signal profile that could be obtained with different averaging times. Simulation results show that the effect of spatial correlation when taken along with sample averaging is to produce a cumulative character in the shadow component of the mobile received signal.
