| Abstract | Wireless local area networks have attracted considerable interest. To enhance the user capacity of such wireless packet communication systems, an architecture where terminals share a common radio channel and several access ports has been proposed in the literature. In this paper we will investigate the performance of such systems, considering several scenarios. Firstly access ports may only receive packets from nearby terminals. Secondly, all access ports may receive packets from any terminal. We distinguish between a highly mobile case, where terminals are assumed to be in a different position in every timeslot, and a stationary case, in which the terminals are at the same place all the time. Our results for slotted ALOHA packet access show that the delay performance of a mobile system is much better than a stationary system, due to the fact that in the mobile case all terminals get in a 'good' position every now and then. Access port diversity slightly improves the performance of a stationary system. A clear difference between the mobile system and the stationary system is that the stationary system is 'unfair', in the sense that distant terminals have considerably worse performance than nearby terminals. We show that by using power control this problem can be solved. The delay performance of the mobile system can also be improved considerably, by using another power control algorithm. |

National Digital Library of India (NDLI) is a virtual repository of learning resources which is not just a repository with search/browse facilities but provides a host of services for the learner community. It is sponsored and mentored by Ministry of Education, Government of India, through its National Mission on Education through Information and Communication Technology (NMEICT). Filtered and federated searching is employed to facilitate focused searching so that learners can find the right resource with least effort and in minimum time. NDLI provides user group-specific services such as Examination Preparatory for School and College students and job aspirants. Services for Researchers and general learners are also provided. NDLI is designed to hold content of any language and provides interface support for 10 most widely used Indian languages. It is built to provide support for all academic levels including researchers and life-long learners, all disciplines, all popular forms of access devices and differently-abled learners. It is designed to enable people to learn and prepare from best practices from all over the world and to facilitate researchers to perform inter-linked exploration from multiple sources. It is developed, operated and maintained from Indian Institute of Technology Kharagpur.
