Abstract	The real-time performance of telephone switching systems and the assurance methodology used for monitoring and assuring that new features are introduced into the system with little or no detriment to the real-time performance of the switching system are discussed. Two simple stochastic models that serve as primitive elements in a more complex model are described. These models are combined to form the overall system. The elements that join the models together are the entry and exit rates of the tasks entering and leaving each subsystem described by the primitive models. The real-time performance metrics are derived from the deliverables at each phase of the development lifecycle. A desirable characteristic of these metrics is that the real-time metrics derived at succeeding phases of the lifecycle more accurately represent the resulting real-time performance of the end product than the preceding real-time indicator. Three types of indicators of system real-time performance are derived throughout the product development lifecycle. These indicator types are projections, estimations, and measurements.
