| Abstract | We propose a new frequency standard in the C-band at 192.0 THz (1561 nm) for optical telecommunications. This standard is based on difference-frequency generation (DFG) in a periodically-poled lithium niobate (PPLN) waveguide using a continuous-wave Nd:YAG laser at 1064.2 nm and a continuous-wave HeNe laser at 632.8 nm, allowing for a frequency standard at 1561 nm which is derived directly from two internationally-accepted primary standards. In preliminary experiments using unstabilized commercial lasers we generated tip to 0.2 /spl mu/W at 1561 nm using only 24 mW at 1064.2 nm (TM/sub 00/ mode) and 28 /spl mu/W at 632.8 nm (TM/sub 01/ mode). The maximum measured conversion efficiency was 4 % W/sup -1/cm/sup -2/. Much higher output powers and conversion efficiencies are expected with an optimized PPLN waveguide designed to allow mixing of only TM/sub 00/ modes, This is also, to our knowledge, the first demonstration of DFG using a HeNe laser. |

National Digital Library of India (NDLI) is a virtual repository of learning resources which is not just a repository with search/browse facilities but provides a host of services for the learner community. It is sponsored and mentored by Ministry of Education, Government of India, through its National Mission on Education through Information and Communication Technology (NMEICT). Filtered and federated searching is employed to facilitate focused searching so that learners can find the right resource with least effort and in minimum time. NDLI provides user group-specific services such as Examination Preparatory for School and College students and job aspirants. Services for Researchers and general learners are also provided. NDLI is designed to hold content of any language and provides interface support for 10 most widely used Indian languages. It is built to provide support for all academic levels including researchers and life-long learners, all disciplines, all popular forms of access devices and differently-abled learners. It is designed to enable people to learn and prepare from best practices from all over the world and to facilitate researchers to perform inter-linked exploration from multiple sources. It is developed, operated and maintained from Indian Institute of Technology Kharagpur.
