Abstract	We first present the results of a network study to quantify the benefits and to suggest parameters of ultra long transmission. Next, we discuss systems design and technology issues. It is concluded that ULH systems will find increasing applications not only for data centric networks, but also for the mixed voice and data networks of today. Even with much more expensive terminations, the reduction in total channel terminations is large enough in a two-layer optical overlay network to justify the use of ULH systems. The reduction in cross-connect size requirements is even more dramatic. To build such overlay networks, point-to-point systems with up to 6000 km reach need to be designed, enabled by such technologies as slope and dispersion-compensating modules and dynamic gain flattening filter subsystems.
