Abstract	Summary form only given. In order to maximize the fiber capacity, full-duplex bi-directional transmission of 1.3/1.55 /spl mu/m WDM signals modulated at around 155 Mbps are employed for ATM-PON systems and 100Base-T Ethernet signal transmission systems. Optical modules for the access networks use passively aligned surface mounting technologies to minimize the assembly cost. We have employed a fiber-embedded optical circuit, in which single mode fiber, embedded in the glass substrate, is directly coupled to the LD chip and PD chip. The LD and PD chips are mounted on different substrates and coupled by the fiber as an effective waveguide. A WDM optical filter, which select the wavelength, is inserted into the fiber in order to provide receiving and transmitting functions. The performance of this optical transceiver module is satisfactory for use in high speed optical access networks.
