In the 4-5 /spl mu/m range a frequency-doubled continuous-wave (CW) CO/sub 2/ laser has the potential for providing an optimal combination of spectral control and frequency stability. However, for CW systems it is difficult to achieve high efficiency of second harmonic generation (SHG) in nonlinear crystals because of low pump power. Intracavity frequency conversion is a powerful means to improve the frequency-doubling efficiency if sufficient laser power is not available. This method puts forward very strict requirements on both the nonlinear crystal and the laser. For example, it is necessary to eliminate Fresnel losses introduced by the crystal and to optimise the harmonic output coupling. Especially important is to use a nonlinear crystal of high optical quality in which residual absorption is minimised. Since nonlinear crystals in the mid-IR region do not meet these tight requirements, intracavity technique has not been applied for CW CO/sub 2/ laser radiation. Using a low-absorption AgGaSe/sub 2/ crystal we obtained for the first time to our knowledge intracavity SHG of a CW CO/sub 2/ laser. Preliminary results on the optimisation of output power at 5 /spl mu/m using different schemes are presented. |

National Digital Library of India (NDLI) is a virtual repository of learning resources which is not just a repository with search/browse facilities but provides a host of services for the learner community. It is sponsored and mentored by Ministry of Education, Government of India, through its National Mission on Education through Information and Communication Technology (NMEICT). Filtered and federated searching is employed to facilitate focused searching so that learners can find the right resource with least effort and in minimum time. NDLI provides user group-specific services such as Examination Preparatory for School and College students and job aspirants. Services for Researchers and general learners are also provided. NDLI is designed to hold content of any language and provides interface support for 10 most widely used Indian languages. It is built to provide support for all academic levels including researchers and life-long learners, all disciplines, all popular forms of access devices and differently-abled learners. It is designed to enable people to learn and prepare from best practices from all over the world and to facilitate researchers to perform inter-linked exploration from multiple sources. It is developed, operated and maintained from Indian Institute of Technology Kharagpur.
