Abstract	A tree metropolitan area network (MAN) is proposed that is based on a broadband cable, enabling bandwidth to be dynamically allocated between groups of stations in an integrated voice/data/video system. The stations are grouped into local area networks (LANs) according to the particular applications involved and also to their distance one from the other. A first goal of the proposed network is to enable intra-LAN and inter-LAN traffic to operate concurrently while each LAN remains independent. The cable bandwidth is frequency-divided into intra-LAN and inter-LAN bands, together with two control bands. Another important goal of the proposed network is that each LAN should be able to acquire and/or free more bandwidth than when the band is statically divided between the different LANs involved. This is achieved by ensuring that the bands are allocated dynamically to the LANs.
