Abstract	Due to the advances of expert system research, the use of an expert system to acquire and represent the expertise (or knowledge) of experienced controller designers is becoming impossible. The purpose of this work is the development of an expert control system, ESCDS (expert system for controller design and supervision). The system is built on a shell tool PC-plus which runs on a personal computer. ESCDS consists of four blocks: the knowledge base, the controller block, the recursive least-squares estimator and the monitor sub-system. The pole-placement method is employed as the main control law in the controller block. The estimator provides the expert system the approximate model of the process. The estimator is turned on or off by the system using the inference mechanism of the monitoring sub-system. Both minimum and nonminimum phase systems can be controlled by ESCDS. An example is used to illustrate the performance of ESCDS.
