| Abstract | Flexible, extensible and lightweight architectures are necessary to allow the participation of small energy producers in the smart grid. In addition to an intelligent energy management system on top of a home automation system these nodes exchange information with other smart grid nodes to enable services like energy trading or demand side management as well as to establish a stable and scalable smart grid. In order to support future developments in the areas of sensing and metering devices, actuators, production and storage technologies and communication protocols a flexible and extensible design is essential. Besides the mentioned areas the proposed architecture supports a distributed deployment on small and energy-saving computing devices to decrease visibility and energy consumption as much as possible. In the further implementation of the layered approach we distinguish between the core system and functional components. Connected via an enterprise message bus the functional can be implemented using different programming languages and deployed on various networked devices following the SOA principles. The core system includes authentication, configuration, persistent storage and a plug and play registration of functional components. In this paper, the design and functionality of our layered and component based architecture is presented. |

National Digital Library of India (NDLI) is a virtual repository of learning resources which is not just a repository with search/browse facilities but provides a host of services for the learner community. It is sponsored and mentored by Ministry of Education, Government of India, through its National Mission on Education through Information and Communication Technology (NMEICT). Filtered and federated searching is employed to facilitate focused searching so that learners can find the right resource with least effort and in minimum time. NDLI provides user group-specific services such as Examination Preparatory for School and College students and job aspirants. Services for Researchers and general learners are also provided. NDLI is designed to hold content of any language and provides interface support for 10 most widely used Indian languages. It is built to provide support for all academic levels including researchers and life-long learners, all disciplines, all popular forms of access devices and differently-abled learners. It is designed to enable people to learn and prepare from best practices from all over the world and to facilitate researchers to perform inter-linked exploration from multiple sources. It is developed, operated and maintained from Indian Institute of Technology Kharagpur.
