| Abstract | The focus of the research is on the design of a decentralized controller for web processing lines that provide improved web tension regulation. First, an accurate dynamic model is developed for the unwind (rewind) roll in a web processing line by taking into account explicitly the time-varying nature of the roll inertia and its radius. The unwind (rewind) roll in a web processing line releases (accumulates) unfinished (finished) web to (from) the process section. Second, a strategy for computing the equilibrium control inputs and reference velocities for each driven roll/roller is given; this strategy is based on dividing the web processing line into tension zones and using the reference web tension of each zone and the reference velocity of the master speed roller which sets the desired web transport speed. Based on the new model developed, a decentralized controller is proposed. Variations in web tension and transport velocity in each tension zone are shown to asymptotically converge to zero. Extensive comparative experiments were conducted with the proposed decentralized controller and an often used decentralized PI controller in industry. A representative sample of the experimental results conducted on a large experimental web line, which mimics most of the features of an industrial process line, is shown and discussed |

National Digital Library of India (NDLI) is a virtual repository of learning resources which is not just a repository with search/browse facilities but provides a host of services for the learner community. It is sponsored and mentored by Ministry of Education, Government of India, through its National Mission on Education through Information and Communication Technology (NMEICT). Filtered and federated searching is employed to facilitate focused searching so that learners can find the right resource with least effort and in minimum time. NDLI provides user group-specific services such as Examination Preparatory for School and College students and job aspirants. Services for Researchers and general learners are also provided. NDLI is designed to hold content of any language and provides interface support for 10 most widely used Indian languages. It is built to provide support for all academic levels including researchers and life-long learners, all disciplines, all popular forms of access devices and differently-abled learners. It is designed to enable people to learn and prepare from best practices from all over the world and to facilitate researchers to perform inter-linked exploration from multiple sources. It is developed, operated and maintained from Indian Institute of Technology Kharagpur.
