Abstract	Summary form only given. A data transmission filter is primarily a pulse shaping network. It has a time domain response which allows the transmission of pulses with negligible intersymbol interference (ISI). In this paper, the various approaches to the design of data transmission filters are reviewed for both analog and digital filters. After comparing the techniques, a very general approach (Baher et al. (1993)) is discussed which has been proved capable of producing the required characteristics without the need for further equalization. The technique applies equally well to both continuous-time and discrete-time filters. The former are useful at radio frequencies (RF) and the latter may be realized either in digital form or using switched-capacitor techniques.
