| Abstract | Mechanical pre-stressing of electrical insulation is achieved by the casting in of fibers in tension into epoxy resin resulting in regions of compressive stress around the fibers following curing of the resin. This has previously been found to increase the resistance to the development of electrical trees in the composite material thus produced. Room temperature cured resin has a relatively low glass transition temperature and the effect of pre-stressing is lost if the samples are heated to temperatures in excess of 40/spl deg/C. This has been demonstrated by monitoring the remanent stress in the fibers by Raman spectroscopy. Using this technique it has been possible to confirm that the pre-stressing effect can be retained at temperatures up to 80/spl deg/C when the glass transition temperature has been raised by curing the resin at 100/spl deg/C. Annealing 100/spl deg/C cured samples at temperatures between 40 and 100/spl deg/C has shown the permanence of the pre-stressing effect up to 80/spl deg/C. Treeing tests carried out at elevated temperatures on pre-stressed samples cured at 100/spl deg/C have revealed that the effect of pre-stressing on the development of electrical trees, although lost above 40/spl deg/C in 20/spl deg/C cured material, shows a degree of permanence at temperatures up to 80/spl deg/C in material cured at 100/spl deg/C. |

National Digital Library of India (NDLI) is a virtual repository of learning resources which is not just a repository with search/browse facilities but provides a host of services for the learner community. It is sponsored and mentored by Ministry of Education, Government of India, through its National Mission on Education through Information and Communication Technology (NMEICT). Filtered and federated searching is employed to facilitate focused searching so that learners can find the right resource with least effort and in minimum time. NDLI is designed to hold content of any language and provides interface support for 10 most widely used Indian languages. It is built to provide support for all academic levels including researchers and life-long learners, all disciplines, all popular forms of access devices and differently-abled learners. It is designed to enable people to learn and prepare from best practices from all over the world and to facilitate researchers to perform inter-linked exploration from multiple sources. It is developed, operated and maintained from Indian Institute of Technology Kharagpur.
