| Abstract | Because depression is one of the most prevalent mental health disorders and a leading cause of disability worldwide, the potential contribution of improved measurement is great. AVEC 2013 heralds the first systematic effort to detect depression using automated analysis of facial expression, body motion, and vocal prosody. This keynote addresses related challenges: These are to reveal the specificity and functions of depression in nonverbal behavior with particular attention to interpersonal consequences. Three central questions are addressed: Are differences between depressed and non-depressed persons specific to depression or are they common to the types of people most likely to become depressed? What mechanisms might contribute to nonverbal behavior in depression? How might depression negatively impact interaction partners? Recent breakthroughs suggest that nonverbal behavior in depression can be automatically measured, is highly specific to severity of depression, and is a strong indicator of change over the course of treatment. Two implications are that interpersonal tasks may be especially informative of presence and severity of depression; and effective detection of depression requires attention to more than indices of affective dysregulation. |
