| Abstract | Head-up displays (HUDs) have long been a part of weapon systems. The HUD was first developed for aircraft pilots to aid in the sighting of their weapons and to provide an artificial horizon for navigation. One of the early HUDs was an electromechanical attack sight that was built in the 1950s for the British Royal Navy (see figure below). HUDs have evolved significantly since then. As technology gradually progressed, HUDs became more sophisticated devices that were able to provide more information and more functionality to the human operator.
