| Abstract | The goal of designing effective methods to teach systems-thinking concepts has been an important focus within the education community. We propose a novel approach to introduce systems-thinking concepts in informal education environments by the use of a tangible user interface. We have designed an analog water computer based on the System Dynamics modeling framework in order to create a physical machine that exhibits complex system behaviors. Our model specifically facilitates enhanced understanding of differential equations and provides visual feedback of the system in real-time. Our tangible and interactive water computer simulates the behavior of the Lotka-Volterra differential equations model and provides an intuitive visual interface that maps symbolism in mathematical equations to discrete physical components of our machine. In addition, our machine has been designed to provide tangible interaction capabilities so that changes to the physical system will provide learners with a deeper understanding of mathematical relationships that are represented by the machine components. The objective is to narrow the gap which exists between the mathematically abstract and the real physical world, and to encourage exploration and stimulate curiosity as these intangible factors are important to foster learner engagement particularly in informal learning environments. |

National Digital Library of India (NDLI) is a virtual repository of learning resources which is not just a repository with search/browse facilities but provides a host of services for the learner community. It is sponsored and mentored by Ministry of Education, Government of India, through its National Mission on Education through Information and Communication Technology (NMEICT). Filtered and federated searching is employed to facilitate focused searching so that learners can find the right resource with least effort and in minimum time. NDLI provides user group-specific services such as Examination Preparatory for School and College students and job aspirants. Services for Researchers and general learners are also provided. NDLI is designed to hold content of any language and provides interface support for 10 most widely used Indian languages. It is built to provide support for all academic levels including researchers and life-long learners, all disciplines, all popular forms of access devices and differently-abled learners. It is designed to enable people to learn and prepare from best practices from all over the world and to facilitate researchers to perform inter-linked exploration from multiple sources. It is developed, operated and maintained from Indian Institute of Technology Kharagpur.
