| Abstract | “We do it that way because we've ALWAYS done it that way…”Due to the rapid advances in computer technology, many of us in Academic Computing are finding ourselves in the position of looking for ways to use this technology to improve those publications that we produce for general distribution. There are new concepts, new software packages and hardware that can now be utilized. One can't help but feel the excitement in our new-found ability to design, format, and produce a professional looking publication without depending on a professional printer. Through the use of a word processing package, a desktop publisher and a laser printer, a whole new world has opened up to us.Academic Computing publications at Ball State University include a quarterly newsletter and mini-course schedule. For the last several years, there has basically been one person in charge of these publications. Publishing the newsletter consisted of writing articles, collecting articles from other staff members, editing all articles, getting them formatted and printed by the secretary, cutting and pasting into newsletter form, and finally, sending the finished copy to the on-campus print shop. The mini-course schedule was produced in this same manner. We restructured our publication method to increase staff involvement and also, we made what seemed like almost a quantum leap to desktop publishing, computer graphics and staff production, making most of these changes between issues. Our original goals were to minimize cutting and pasting, to involve more staff and to produce a professional set of publications which would be more readable and helpful to the individual user. In so doing, we had to learn a lot of new things very quickly: new software, new hardware and—just as important—new ideas. One outcome was the many favorable comments we received from the academic community on the revised format of our mini-course schedule. We feel that our presentation is to show that it is possible to make a dramatic change in production methods, given the right attitudes of acceptance, and willingness to utilize new resources: computer, personal, and personnel. We had to overcome more than just technical changes—the greater challenge was in forming these concepts and new ideas. |

National Digital Library of India (NDLI) is a virtual repository of learning resources which is not just a repository with search/browse facilities but provides a host of services for the learner community. It is sponsored and mentored by Ministry of Education, Government of India, through its National Mission on Education through Information and Communication Technology (NMEICT). Filtered and federated searching is employed to facilitate focused searching so that learners can find the right resource with least effort and in minimum time. NDLI provides user group-specific services such as Examination Preparatory for School and College students and job aspirants. Services for Researchers and general learners are also provided. NDLI is designed to hold content of any language and provides interface support for 10 most widely used Indian languages. It is built to provide support for all academic levels including researchers and life-long learners, all disciplines, all popular forms of access devices and differently-abled learners. It is designed to enable people to learn and prepare from best practices from all over the world and to facilitate researchers to perform inter-linked exploration from multiple sources. It is developed, operated and maintained from Indian Institute of Technology Kharagpur.

NDLI is a conglomeration of freely available or institutionally contributed or donated or publisher managed contents. Almost all these contents are hosted and accessed from respective sources. The responsibility for authenticity, relevance, completeness, accuracy, reliability and suitability of these contents rests with the respective organization and NDLI has no responsibility or liability for these. Every effort is made to keep the NDLI portal up and running smoothly unless there are some unavoidable technical issues.
Ministry of Education, through its National Mission on Education through Information and Communication Technology (NMEICT), has sponsored and funded the National Digital Library of India (NDLI) project.
