Abstract	SACLA is an association of people involved in the teaching of Computer Science and Information Systems at universities throughout Southern Africa. The main activity of SACLA is the annual conference, at which issues concerning teaching and research in ICT in Southern Africa are discussed. In 2009 the annual conference, SACLA 2009, is being hosted by the Department of Information Systems and the Department of Computer Science at Rhodes University. The theme of the conference is "Connecting Students to the Future". This year 27 papers were submitted, of which 21 were candidates for inclusion as full papers in the conference proceedings. These were submitted to a thorough double blind review requiring a minimum of 3 reviews from an extensive program committee comprising subjects experts recruited from both within the borders of South Africa and beyond. Papers acceptance required a clear consensus amongst the reviewers. Disagreements amongst reviewers were resolved by an additional assessor whose recommendation was considered by the internal program committee. Offers of acceptance were made to the authors of the 15 papers which, after revision in line with reviewer comments, are included in these published conference proceedings. A further 11 papers were accepted only for presentation as short papers or posters.
