| Abstract | Measuring document similarity is important in order to find documents which are similar to a given query document from a user. Text-based document similarity is measured by comparing the words in two documents. The representative text-based document similarity is the cosine similarity. Since the cosine similarity computes document similarity by estimating the frequency of common words, it cannot reflect word similarity. To solve this problem, we propose a new document similarity measure based on the earth mover's distance (EMD). The EMD is one of the most popular distance functions used to search similar multimedia contents and is known to provide good search results. To apply the EMD to compute document similarity, we have to solve two problems: (1) The EMD is too time consuming to be used in a document database, (2) the distance between words should be defined. Our proposed approach first extracts topics as new features of a document by applying the latent Dirichlet allocation, which is a generative model of a document. It can decrease the computational cost of the EMD because the number of topics is much smaller than the number of words in a document. After extracting the topics, the proposed approach calculates the distance between topics based on the relation between the topics and the words in a document database, thereby making computing document similarity based on the EMD possible. Our approach searches documents more accurately since we can consider the semantic similarity by using the EMD. Experimental results on a real-world document database indicate that the proposed approach outperforms the cosine similarity in terms of the accuracy and the performance. |

National Digital Library of India (NDLI) is a virtual repository of learning resources which is not just a repository with search/browse facilities but provides a host of services for the learner community. It is sponsored and mentored by Ministry of Education, Government of India, through its National Mission on Education through Information and Communication Technology (NMEICT). Filtered and federated searching is employed to facilitate focused searching so that learners can find the right resource with least effort and in minimum time. NDLI provides user group-specific services such as Examination Preparatory for School and College students and job aspirants. Services for Researchers and general learners are also provided. NDLI is designed to hold content of any language and provides interface support for 10 most widely used Indian languages. It is built to provide support for all academic levels including researchers and life-long learners, all disciplines, all popular forms of access devices and differently-abled learners. It is designed to enable people to learn and prepare from best practices from all over the world and to facilitate researchers to perform inter-linked exploration from multiple sources. It is developed, operated and maintained from Indian Institute of Technology Kharagpur.

NDLI is a conglomeration of freely available or institutionally contributed or donated or publisher managed contents. Almost all these contents are hosted and accessed from respective sources. The responsibility for authenticity, relevance, completeness, accuracy, reliability and suitability of these contents rests with the respective organization and NDLI has no responsibility or liability for these. Every effort is made to keep the NDLI portal up and running smoothly unless there are some unavoidable technical issues.
