| Abstract | Studying examples of working code is an excellent way for users of advanced computing resources to understand how to complete a task given a set of resources, constraints and goals. Expert users are adept at searching the Internet for examples that they can use or modify, yet novices can be easily overwhelmed by the quantity and variety of examples available online. Even when a relevant example has been found, it often must be modified in order for the user to use it on a particular advanced computing resource (HPC). Copied examples often fail to work at first, and it can be difficult for novice users to understand the problem: are they using the example incorrectly? Is the example itself broken? Or is the example correct but the parameters need to be adjusted for the specific system being used? This paper presents a simple solution to this challenge: a "getexample" utility that allows users to access working examples of how to complete a variety of tasks on a specific HPC system. While getexample was designed for an HPC system that relies on a command line interface, variations on this theme could easily be developed for other interfaces and resources. |
