| Abstract | Welcome to the 5th ICSE Workshop on Games and Software Engineering (GAS 2016) held on May 16, 2016 in Austin U.S.A. in conjunction with the 2016 ACM/IEEE International Conference on Software Engineering! The demand for computer games for entertainment and game-based applications for non-entertainment domains such as education, healthcare, defense, and scientific research (i.e., "serious games") continues to grow. As complex applications, many traditional grand challenges in software engineering (SE) arise during the development of computer games, in addition to the attention on the user experience for the players. GAS 2016 explores issues that crosscut the software engineering and the game engineering communities. Building upon the first four ICSE GAS Workshops, this event provides a forum to interactively explore leading edge research topics in game software engineering. The full day programme offers an interesting mix of activities including keynote and paper presentations, in addition to interactive working/game demonstration sessions; the intent is to promote discussions among the participants. The workshop has accepted eight, high quality submissions from research groups across Asia, Australasia, Europe, North America, and South America (four long and four short). The innovative results span two broad perspectives: SE for Games and Games for SE; more specifically the articles address topics on theoretical foundations of computing, program comprehension, program debugging, design, and development processes. |
