Description | The Barre Evening Enterprise, founded in 1898 as Barre's second daily newspaper, provided national, regional, and local news under editor Henry C. Whitaker. Renamed the Barre Evening Telegram after Whitaker and others purchased it, the paper featured editorial commentary titled "Sparks from the Granite City," reflecting Barre's granite industry and immigrant population. Notably, it briefly included an Italian section, "Parte Italiana," managed by Salavatore Pallavicini, an Italian anarchist. However, financial challenges led to changes in ownership and editorial stance, including opposition to Vermont's liquor licensing efforts under Rev. Walter R. Davenport's editorship. Despite attempts to shift to morning publication to avoid competition, the Barre Evening Telegram ceased operations in August 1905. NDLI hosts contents from/of year 1898 of this newspaper. |
