Description | The "Fort Wrangel News," established by Angus G. McBride on June 8, 1898, alongside Fred L. Henshaw and Charles A. Hopp, aimed to promote Wrangell's future as a thriving hub. However, doubts lingered, with some questioning the town's prospects. Despite initial enthusiasm, Henshaw's departure in August 1898 led to Hopp assuming dual roles. While the paper pledged to focus on local Alaska news, it extensively covered the Spanish-American War and America's new colonial territories. Ultimately, due to financial challenges, McBride and Hopp relocated the paper to Douglas Island in November 1898, where they launched the "Douglas Island News." NDLI hosts contents from/of year 1898 of this newspaper. |
