Description | The "Blue Hen’s Chicken and Delaware Democratic Whig," launched in 1845 by William T. Jeandell and Francis Vincent, evolved into a prominent community newspaper under Vincent's sole ownership. Renamed "Blue Hen’s Chicken" in 1848, it became Delaware's largest paper, focusing on local news and advocating political shifts. In 1855, Dr. James Heyward merged it with the "Statesman" to create the "Statesman and Blue Hen’s Chicken." Henry Eckel took over in 1855, renaming it the "Delaware State Journal and Statesman," with both semi-weekly and weekly editions. It briefly appeared as the "Weekly Delaware State Journal, Statesman, and Blue Hen’s Chicken" before transitioning to simpler titles. NDLI hosts contents from/of year 1857 of this newspaper. |
