Description | The Statesman & Blue Hen's Chicken, originating in 1854, was a combination of the Blue Hen’s Chicken and Delaware Democratic Whig and the Statesman, two Wilmington newspapers. Initially co-founded by William T. Jeandell and Francis Vincent in 1845, the Blue Hen’s Chicken eventually became solely owned by Vincent, advocating for local community issues and political causes. In 1855, Dr. James Heyward merged it with the Statesman, continuing its anti-slavery stance for about a year before selling to Henry Eckel. The paper then underwent various name changes, eventually settling as the Delaware State Journal and Statesman, with both semi-weekly and weekly editions. NDLI hosts contents from/of year 1854 of this newspaper. |
