Description | Established in 1849 by Nathan W. Thayer, the Ashtabula Telegraph endured as the city's primary newspaper, succeeding several short-lived predecessors. Renamed the Ashtabula Weekly Telegraph in 1853 under John Booth's ownership, it became the area's record keeper, covering local news, births, marriages, and deaths. Republican-leaning but claiming independence, it staunchly supported Union interests during the Civil War. James Reed and his son expanded its reach, increasing circulation and content diversity. By 1880, it returned to a weekly format, offering expanded sections on temperance, education, and religion. Despite a brief daily edition in 1884, it ceased publication in 1911 after nearly 70 years. NDLI hosts contents from/of year 1880 of this newspaper. |
