Description | The Journal of Freedom, established in Raleigh, N.C. in 1865 by Edward P. Brooks and John Quincy Adams Crane, championed universal suffrage and equal rights for all. Despite initial support, the paper faced numerous challenges, including financial difficulties and opposition to its message. It provided extensive coverage of the 1865 Freedmen’s Convention and garnered endorsement from prominent civil rights leader Abraham Galloway. However, after only five issues, the paper ceased publication due to lack of advertising revenue and other obstacles. Its brief but impactful existence highlighted the struggles and aspirations of freed people in post-Civil War North Carolina. NDLI hosts contents from/of year 1865 of this newspaper. |
