Description | Established in 1826 by Thomas William Pegues, The Camden Journal chronicled the fortunes of Camden, SC. It merged briefly with Sumter's Southern Whig before reverting to its original name in 1836. Ownership changes ensued until 1850 when Thomas James Warren and Charles Augustus Price took over, expressing strong political views on states' rights and secession. Warren suspended publication to join the Confederate Army, leading to a series of title changes during the Civil War. In 1866, Pegues resumed publishing, followed by various owners until its closure in 1891, marking the end of an era for Camden. NDLI hosts contents from/of year 1865 of this newspaper. |
