Temporal Coverage | 1910-1910 |
Description | The Liberty, launched in 1909 in La Center, Kentucky, emerged as an extension of the local voice of the National Farmers Union, aiming to spread its message statewide. Originating from the La Center Advance, a Democratic weekly supportive of the National Farmers Union, the Liberty sought to expand the union's influence beyond the Jackson Purchase region. Despite initial activity in western Kentucky, the union struggled to gain traction elsewhere, facing obstacles such as conflicts with the Planters Protective Association over representation of tobacco farmers. The surviving issue of the Liberty from 1910 includes coverage of the Farmers Union national meeting, discussions on cooperative initiatives like the Farmers' Union Exchange in Louisville, and advocacy for alternative crops to tobacco. The paper ceased operations between 1911 and 1913, leaving behind a glimpse of the challenges faced by the National Farmers Union in early 20th-century Kentucky. NDLI hosts contents from/of year 1910 of this newspaper. |
