Temporal Coverage | 1883-1883 |
Description | The Delaware Farmer emerged as a section within the Milford Chronicle, Delaware's first dollar newspaper, founded in 1878 by Julius E. Scott and Theodore Townsend. Initially politically independent, the Chronicle shifted to include the Delaware Farmer segment to attract rural readers. In 1886, Townsend regained control, returning the paper to nonpartisan reporting. The paper underwent mergers and transitions, including the acquisition of the Peninsular News and Advertiser in 1904. Ownership passed to Townsend's son, G. Marshall Townsend, after his death in 1936. By the early 1960s, it circulated around 8,000 copies weekly, remaining influential until its transition to the Chronicle in 1974. NDLI hosts contents from/of year 1883 of this newspaper. |
