Description | The Bozeman Weekly Chronicle, launched on January 27, 1883, by Samuel W. Langhorne, a pharmacist turned publisher, served as a Democratic-leaning weekly publication. Langhorne, a prominent figure who previously operated a drug store in Helena, ventured into publishing upon relocating to Bozeman in 1870. Despite his background in pharmacy, Langhorne also engaged in various public roles, including serving as a probate judge and legislator. Interestingly, the paper's second issue advised against convening a constitutional convention in 1883 until the completion of the Northern Pacific Railroad in Montana. Abel Kelsey Yerkes, a well-traveled Quaker from New Jersey, acquired Langhorne's stake in December 1884. Yerkes, known for his earlier newspaper ventures and adventurous spirit, continued the publication's legacy until it was succeeded by the Bozeman Chronicle, purchased by industrialist Marcus Daly during the War of the Copper Kings in the 1890s. NDLI hosts contents from/of year 1883 of this newspaper. |
