Description | The Delaware Democrat, initiated in Wilmington, Delaware, in 1857 by Dr. W. H. White and Dr. J. Stradley, underwent several transformations. Initially politically independent, it shifted ownership and titles, becoming the Commonwealth under Wharton and Stradley. Later, William T. Jeandell joined Stradley, leading to another name change in 1858 to the Commonwealth. Joseph M. Barr took over, renaming it the Blue Hen’s Chicken and Commonwealth, with a Republican Party focus. Francis Vincent, a later owner, used it for anti-slavery advocacy and supported women’s and workers’ rights. Despite these efforts, the paper ceased publication after Vincent sold it to Allen and Biddle in 1863. NDLI hosts contents from/of year 1857 of this newspaper. |
