Temporal Coverage | 1865-1865 |
Description | The Weekly Copiahan commenced publication in September 1865 in Hazlehurst, Mississippi, under the editorship of John Vance and S. F. Massengill. It positioned itself as a supporter of farmers, mechanics, laborers, and various professions. Alongside political commentary and national news, it carried legal notices, letters to the editor, legislative acts, advertisements, and business cards. The paper reflected the political leaning of the Democratic-Conservative Party, evident in its election tickets and announcements. A rival publication, the Copiah Signal, emerged in 1882 under Oscar Johnston, formerly associated with the Weekly Copiahan. After a fire in 1885, the two papers merged to form the Signal-Copiahan, later reverting to the Copiah Signal. NDLI hosts contents from/of year 1865 of this newspaper. |
