Description | The DeSoto Times, published from 1879 to 1898 in Hernando, Mississippi, chronicled local and national events in the prime cotton-growing area of DeSoto County. Initially established as the People’s Press around 1846, it underwent several title changes before becoming the DeSoto Times under proprietor William S. Slade. Known for its editorials on politics and history, it also featured local news, including marriage and death announcements, legal notices, and agricultural updates on cotton cultivation. After merging with the Promoter in 1898 to form the Times-Promoter, its coverage expanded to include more national and international news, alongside continued focus on local issues and farming matters. NDLI hosts contents from/of year 1890 of this newspaper. |
