Temporal Coverage | 1881-1891 |
Description | The Alliance Eagle, founded in 1881 in Ellisville, Mississippi, served as a Democratic weekly publication until its closure in 1891. Under the ownership of physician Washington L. Lee, it provided local news alongside national and state politics. The paper ceased publication, possibly absorbed by the New South or the Ellisville News. The New South-News emerged from a merger in 1905, with veteran publisher James J. Shannon at the helm. Renamed the Jones County News under Edgar G. Harris in 1909, it continued the tradition of community reporting until its closure in 1985 as the Jones County Progress-Item. The paper reflected local concerns, including education and agricultural issues, while also covering national events like the San Francisco earthquake and World War I. NDLI hosts contents from/of year 1890 of this newspaper. |
