Description | The Daily National Era, established in 1854 in Washington, D.C., was a daily newspaper affiliated with The National Era, a prominent anti-slavery weekly publication. Edited by Dr. Gamaliel Bailey, the Daily National Era aimed to provide timely coverage of congressional activities, shipping out editions the morning after publication. Despite its brief existence from January to August 1854, the paper struggled to gain sufficient subscribers and ceased publication after the conclusion of that year's congressional session. Dr. Bailey, who previously edited anti-slavery newspapers in Ohio, including the Cincinnati Weekly Herald and Philanthropist, continued his editorial work until his death in 1859. The National Era, including its daily counterpart, played a significant role in advocating against slavery and promoting free speech, gaining national attention for its serialized publication of "Uncle Tom's Cabin" in 1851. NDLI hosts contents from/of year 1854 of this newspaper. |
