Description | The Greenbrier Era, launched in 1851 by William F. Farish and Joseph S. Crane in Lewisburg, Virginia (later West Virginia), became a significant antebellum newspaper despite frequent ownership changes. Renamed the Greenbrier Weekly Era in 1854, it flourished with short stories, local news, and advertisements. Politically, it embraced the Know-Nothing movement, advocating nativist ideals. As tensions rose with Southern secession, editors Adam C. Snyder and J.S. Johnston urged compromise, but Snyder eventually joined the Confederate army. With war looming, the Era ceased publication, though its presses were briefly used by Union soldiers in 1862 to print the Yankee. NDLI hosts contents from/of year 1854 of this newspaper. |
