Description | The Weekly Gazette emerged briefly in Martinsburg, Virginia, during the Civil War under the helm of editor James O'Neal. Born out of Union occupation, it aimed to be an "unconditional Union paper" amidst the volatile conflict. O'Neal's Gazette, though short-lived, provided a glimpse into local military and social affairs, publishing orders from Union commanders, communications from President Lincoln, and reflections on the divided sentiments among the populace. However, with Martinsburg facing Confederate attacks in June 1863, the Gazette's run was abruptly halted after just one issue. O'Neal's fate mirrored that of his paper, as he was captured and later died in a Confederate prison. NDLI hosts contents from/of year 1863 of this newspaper. |
