Temporal Coverage | 1863-1863 |
Description | John L. Pennington initiated the Newbern Weekly Progress in late September 1858, following the launch of Newbern's first daily paper, the Daily Progress. Initially politically independent, the Progress shifted tone during the 1860 presidential election, endorsing Stephen A. Douglas. As the Civil War loomed, it declared support for the South. When Pennington left to serve in the military, the paper continued briefly under Confederate control. Federal forces took over, briefly publishing Union-leaning content. Pennington resumed publishing in Raleigh, while the Newbern Progress ceased around December 1863, potentially due to competition from a new local paper, the North Carolina Times. NDLI hosts contents from/of year 1863 of this newspaper. |
