Description | The Richmond Weekly Palladium, originating from the Richmond Palladium founded in 1831, witnessed several transformations over the years. Initially aligned with the Whig Party, it shifted its political allegiance to the emerging Republican Party by the mid-19th century. Under various owners, including Isaac Jenkinson and Martin Cullaton, the paper saw divisions into weekly and daily editions in the late 19th century. Rudolph G. Leeds later acquired the paper and infused it with progressive ideals, supporting causes such as Theodore Roosevelt's Progressive Party bid and advocating for fair pricing systems. By the early 20th century, it merged with other publications to become the Richmond Palladium and Sun-Telegram. Despite changes in ownership and editorial direction, the paper maintained its presence and underwent further mergers until it became known as the Palladium Item. Under the ownership of the Gannett Company, Inc., it transitioned to an independent stance, evolving into a prominent publication with a circulation of over 12,000 by 2015. NDLI hosts contents from/of year 1875 of this newspaper. |
