Description | The Columbia Phoenix emerged in 1865 amidst the ruins of Columbia, South Carolina, following the devastation of the Civil War. Founded by Julian A. Selby, it defiantly vowed to witness the city's rebirth from its ashes. With esteemed editor William Gilmore Simms, it chronicled the struggles and aspirations of Midlands residents. Facing scarcity, the paper accepted food staples as subscriptions. Simms's departure amid tensions with Federal troops marked a turning point. Renamed multiple times, including the Columbia Daily Phoenix, it evolved to the Columbia Weekly Gleaner. Eventually acquired by the Columbia Daily Register's owners, its last issue appeared in 1878, leaving a legacy of resilience amid adversity. NDLI hosts contents from/of year 1865 of this newspaper. |
