Description | The Safford Graham Guardian had its genesis in 1895 as a weekly Democratic paper championing local interests, edited by John J. Birdno. Birdno's tenure was marked by the fervent debate over relocating the Graham County seat back to Safford, where it had originally been established in 1881. Another paper, the Safford Rattler, emerged in 1896 with a clear agenda: to advocate for the return of the county seat to Safford. Despite its short-lived existence, the Rattler ardently pursued this cause, attributing the loss of the county seat to fraudulent tactics. However, Solomonville retained its status as the county seat until 1915, when Safford finally won the seat back. NDLI hosts contents from/of year 1896 of this newspaper. |
