Description | The Ranch, based in North Yakima, debuted its inaugural issue on January 20, 1894, printed by the Yakima Herald. Operated by the Yakima Publishing Company, it aimed to provide agricultural insight to local farmers, advocating for the application of scientific knowledge in farming practices. However, financial difficulties and shifting ownership plagued the publication, leading to its likely demise by August 18, 1894. Despite its brief existence, The Ranch is recognized as one of Washington state's earliest agricultural journals. Under the editorship of Edgar Howard Libby, educated at the University of Massachusetts, it left a mark on the local publishing landscape, inspiring similar ventures and attracting attention to planned irrigation projects in North Yakima. Libby eventually left North Yakima to establish the Lewiston Water and Power Company in Idaho, undertaking significant irrigation and bridge construction endeavors. NDLI hosts contents from/of year 1894 of this newspaper. |
